Toby is a 4-year-old male cat who weighs nearly 16 pounds. He’s at Lollypop Farm for the second time, by no fault of his own. Originally, Toby came to Lollypop as a stray, and then he was adopted and returned because his owner’s landlord did not allow pets.

This special boy has both his front and back paws declawed. He loves to give kisses and have his chin rubbed, but he isn’t too fond of having his back end touched!

You can adopt Toby for just through Friday, August 13th as part of our “13 Days to Change Their Luck” Adopt-a-Thon. Help change Toby’s luck today!

Tess is the daughter of Adele, one of eight animals rescued from a slaughterhouse in Santa Cruz, California. The slaughterhouse is still in business, though it was recently cited for improperly slaughtering an animal (they didn't render a goat insensible to pain before her throat was cut). Tess is definitely a lucky goat kid. She'll never be seen as a commodity or food, only as the wonderful, beautiful, rambunctious kid who she is. www.animalplace.org

Chipmunk in Rocky Mountain National Park
names for animals
*Tamias is Latin for "storer," a reference to the animals' habit of collecting and storing food for winter use.[1] Twenty-five species belong to this family,[2] with one species in northeastern Asia, one in eastern North America, and the rest native to western North America.

The name originally may have been spelled "chitmunk" (from the Odawa word jidmoonh, meaning "red squirrel"; c.f. Ojibwe, ajidamoo). However, the earliest form cited in the Oxford English Dictionary (from 1842) is "chipmonk". Other early forms include "chipmuck" and "chipminck", and in the 1830s they were also referred to as "chip squirrels," possibly in reference to the sound they make. They are also called "striped squirrels" or "ground squirrels," though the name "ground squirrel" more often refers to the genus Spermophilus. Tamias and Spermophilus are only two of the 13 genera of ground-living sciurids.

The Australian Magpie, Gymnorhina tibicen is a medium-sized black and white bird, closely related to the butcherbirds and currawongs in the Artamidae family. Early European settlers named it for its black and white coloration, similar to the familiar European magpie, which is a more distant relative.

Glum Ninjas C.P.F. is a covert protection force for people who want inconspicuous protection. They disguise themselves as run-of-the-mill stuffed animals and keep a watchful eye, waiting to spring into action at the first sign of danger.

Glum Ninjas are around 8 inches tall by about 7.5 inches wide and are ok for gentle play but they are made of felt which will give way if treated too roughly so they are probably more suited for collectors and plush-a-holics rather than small children.(some toys are too cool for kids) All Glum Ninjas are named, cataloged and come with an authentic Glum Ninja coin that identifies them.

Nearly 200 members and supporters of The Humane Society of the United States joined together on Wed, March 24th, 2010 in Albany for the New York State Humane Lobby Day.

The animal advocates met with 123 of the 212 state legislators on pending legislation to strengthen anti-animal fighting laws, prohibit the canned shoots of captive exotic animals, crack down on puppy mills, and protect farm animals from cruelty.

The event was co-sponsored by Farm Sanctuary, Humane Society of New York, and New York State Humane Association. Senator Toby Ann Stavisky received a humane legislator award to commend her support and dedication to animal protection issues, and spoke about the bill she sponsored to strenghten NY's anti-animal fighting laws. Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal spoke about the bills she sponsored to protect farm animals from cruelty.

Bubba is my daughters cat. She was living in OK for a short time and she found him looking for food in the dumpster. She didn't think he weighed more than a pound. She took him in and fed him. A few weeks later when I flew out to help her move back to California Bubba didn't weigh very much. Now, over a year and he is probably close to a 20 pound cat. He was a lucky kitty.

Just look at that smile! Randy is a 9-year-old male beagle/retriever mix who was returned to Lollypop Farm because his owner could no longer afford to keep a dog. He weighs about 75 pounds.

If you see Randy in his kennel, you'll probably hear a lot of barking, but he quiets down when he's out and about. Randy loves to go for walks and does well on the leash. He is eligible for our Seniors-for-Seniors program, so adopters age 60 and older can take him home free of charge!

Randy needs to go to a home without children under 12, and he also needs to be the only dog in the home.

This is sort of an iconic picture of Joshua Tree National Park, except that it contains none of the plants the park is named for. But you will see scenes like this all through the park. We went this time to see the Spring blooms, one of which (the yucca plant) is captured in the lower left corner. Above the scene is a contrail of a jet flying over this place which has not changed in centuries.
Hidden Valley was, as legend tells us, the place where cattle rustlers would hide their critters until the law stopped looking for them. Though it doesn't look like it, there is food for the animals here and hidden springs for water.

Seen on a Fraser Magnolia at the Animal Habitats. The wind interfered and wiggled the leaves around. I probably should have set the ISO higher to get a faster shutter speed; 1/60 seconds obviously wasn't fast enough. I liked the contrast of the different greens on the young versus old leaves though.

The Bornean Orangutan, Pongo pygmaeus, is a species of orangutan native to the island of Borneo. Together with the slightly smaller Sumatran Orangutan, it belongs to the only genus of great apes native to Asia.

The Bornean Orangutan has a life span of about 35 to 40 years in the wild; in captivity it can live to be 60.

The Bornean Orangutan lives in tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests in the Bornean lowlands as well as mountainous areas 1500 m in elevation. It lives at different heights in the trees and moves large distances to find trees bearing fruit. Its diet consists of fruit as well as shoots, bark, mineral rich soil and bird eggs. It also eats insects but to a lesser extent than the Sumatran Orangutan.

The Bornean Orangutan travels on the ground more than its Sumatran counterpart. It is theorized this may be in part because there is no need to avoid the large predators which only exist in Sumatra such as the Sumatran Tiger.

The Bornean Orangutan is more common than the Sumatran, with about 45,000 individuals existing in the wild; there are only about 7,500 of the Sumatran species left in the wild. Orangutans are becoming increasingly endangered due to habitat destruction, and the bushmeat trade, and young orangutans are captured to be sold as pets, usually entailing the killing of its mother.

A Bolivian vizcacha

Lagidium viscacia ... the Mountain Viscacha is a rabbit-like rodent related to the chinchilla. Next to it, the plant is Llareta.

Viscachas or vizcachas are rodents of two genera (Lagidium and Lagostomus) in the family Chinchillidae. They are closely related to chinchillas, and look similar to rabbits. There are five extant species of viscacha:

Plains viscacha (Lagostomus maximus): Resident of the Pampas of Argentina, easily differentiated from other viscachas by black and gray mustache-like facial markings. This species lives colonially in warrens of ten to over one hundred. It is very vocal and emits alarm calls. The plains viscacha can strip grassland used to graze livestock; this caused ranchers to consider the rodent a pest species.

Lagidium ahuacaense: a newly described species of mountain viscacha from the Ecuadorean Andes.

Northern viscacha (Lagidium peruanum): Native to the Peruvian Andes at those elevations between the tree line and the snow line. It is dorsally gray or brown in color, with a bushy tail and long, furry ears. This species lives in large colonies separated into individual family units, like an apartment complex. It eats a wide range of plant matter, settling for almost anything it can find growing in the harsh, rocky environment.

Mountain viscacha (Lagidium viscacia): Also called southern viscacha, this species is similar to the northern viscacha, but its pelage is more red in color. It lives in similar habitat in the Andes.

Wolffsohn's viscacha (Lagidium wolffsohni): Little is known about this species, as it is rarer than the other four viscachas.

Yareta (Azorella compacta, also known as "Llareta" in Spanish or Azorella yareta in the past) is a tiny flowering plant in the family Apiaceae native to South America, occurring in the Puna grasslands of the Andes in Peru, Bolivia, the north of Chile and the west of Argentina at between 3200 and 4500 metres altitude.

Yareta is an evergreen perennial being in leaf all year. The pink or lavender flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by insects. The plant is self-fertile.

The plant prefers light (sandy) and well-drained soils. It can grow in nutritionally poor environments, no matter if the soil is acidic, neutral or basic (alkaline). Yareta is well-adapted to high insolation rates which are typical of the highlands, and cannot grow in shade. The plant grows in a very compact way in order to reduce heat losses and very close to ground level where air temperature is one or two degrees Celsius higher than the mean air temperature, this is due to the longwave radiation re-radiated by the soil (which is usually dark gray to black in the Puna).
The plant growth rate has been recently estimated at approximately 1.5 centimeters per year (Kleier and Rundel 2004). Many yaretas are over 3,000 years old.
